A Great Team

What makes a great team? When we come together as family, in a platoon or in any organization, what ingredients makes a team great? The scripture reveals to us a few ingredients of a great team, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administrating God’s grace in its … Continue reading

home on wheels

“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise;“–Hebrews 11:8-9   Well, it is official, I have decided for at least … Continue reading

I Cannot Be a Rock or an Island

Lately, a few of my counseling sessions with people will be about the need for community or family. And, a few have expressed the challenges of working through past hurts and trust community or family again. And, of course, I think that a good church can be a great community where an individual can find spiritual healing. A kind of church community that has a proper understanding of grace and love. And, I am reading … Continue reading

Henri Nouwen on Hospitality

The other day, I was finishing up reading the book The Abundant Community: Awakening the Power of Families and Neighborhoods and came across Henri Nouwen’s thoughts on hospitality (p.110). And it inspired me!! It goes something like this: HOSPITALITY is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place. It is not to bring men and women over to our side, but to offer freedom not disturbed by dividing lines. … Continue reading

Blessings of Freedom

Today, I am chilling at a local Starbucks and am glad that I didn’t make any plans to be with friends during this 4th of July. Mind you, it is not that I am anti-social but, it is just a simple desire to be left alone… by myself processing-reflecting on–blessings of freedom–that our country enjoys. And as I sit with a cup of java, I look out the window and see American flags hanging on … Continue reading

Irish Grace Prayer

Note: At a Farewell dinner, the below prayer, Irish Grace prayer was used. Last Friday, I was asked to offer an invocation prayer at our Battalion Commander’s Farewell dinner. Some times, I craft up the prayer and other times I borrow a prayer from a source. This time, I opened up the book titled, The Notre Dame Book of Prayer, 49.          Irish Grace Prayer May this food restore our strength, giving new energy … Continue reading

Success

Have you ever thought about what makes one successful in this life? I mean, what defines success? This week, I have been prayerfully thinking about success and military service. And, I came across this inspirational prose passage called, “Success:”  To laugh often and love much: To win the respect of intelligent people And the affection of children; To earn the approbation of honest critics And endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To … Continue reading

C.S. Lewis on engaging and embracing desire

Christianity has a rich history of engaging and even embracing desire. As C. S. Lewis has observed: If there lurks in most modern minds the notion that to desire our own good and to earnestly hope for the enjoyment of it is a bad thing, I suggest that this notion has crept in from Kant and the Stoics and is no part of the Christian faith. Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward … Continue reading

Searching for a Life Partner

Is there a formula for dating? For the last few days, I have been mediating on the biblical story The journey of Abraham’s servant to Mesopotamia, His meeting with Rebekah.  It is a story of Abraham’s servant went back to his hometown in finding Rebekah, a soul-mate for Issac. And so, there is a discovered question posed by Derek Prince, “should [we] pursue the course of Abraham’s servant, who combined trust in God’s sovereignty with a plan to … Continue reading

Once bitten, twice shy

Tonight, I am watching the movie, The Last Samurai. And I am surprisingly astonished how the character, Taka would care to the wounds of Captain Nathan Algren. Despite Captain Algren taking the life of Hirotaro (Taka’s husband), she honorably cares for him.  Eventually, Captain Algren sincerely apologizes to Taka for Hirotaro’s death which she unexpectedly accepts because of the honor of battle. Which, the theme “honor” is one of several favorite themes of mine discovered … Continue reading
